Editorial spotlight · King’s Bay, Crystal River
A family-owned dive shop and tour center that has run manatee swims on King’s Bay for more than twenty years, with scuba-trained in-water guides and a Save the Manatee Club Guardian Guide designation it received in 2019. Wetsuits, a flotation device and a guide in the water with you on every swim.

The operation
The homepage says the company has been family owned for more than 20 years and lists “kindness, curiosity, and conservation” as its guiding line. It is a PADI and SSI dive facility; the FAQ says every in-water guide is a trained scuba professional, which it calls the only such combination in Crystal River. Executive manager Mike Engiles is quoted on the Guardian Guide page.
The Guardian Guide program, which the company joined on February 11, 2019 as one of the first operators, requires wetsuits and flotation for swimmers, passive observation from at least a body length, a guide ratio no higher than 12 to 1 and captains who stay aboard. The shop sits at the Days Inn on North Suncoast Boulevard with its own ramp and slips, and opens 363 days a year, 7 to 4.
“Kindness, curiosity, and conservation are at the heart of everything we do.”

Reviews
Reviewers praise the guides, small groups, the ethical approach and the photos; one soft spot was a tour cut short for cold weather without a refund.
